This change will give merchants more freedom to manage their digital assets and respond to a rapidly changing economy.
More than just a technological innovation, Square’s update signals a broader shift as more businesses and retailers adopt cryptocurrencies as part of their daily operations.
More choices: flexible payouts and seamless swaps
At the heart of Square’s announcement is an expansion of the set of payment options available to its vast network of merchants. Sellers can now choose to pay in BTC or USD for each sale. Additionally, there is an option to exchange between Bitcoin and fiat currencies. This means you can convert BTC to BTC, BTC to fiat, fiat to BTC, or fiat to fiat, all within Square’s ecosystem.

This new flexibility is a huge step forward for merchants looking to keep pace with the evolving world of digital payments. For example, coffee shop owners who receive payments in US dollars can now easily convert a portion of their profits to Bitcoin as a hedge against inflation or as part of a broader investment strategy. Conversely, merchants who have adopted Bitcoin can choose to instantly convert their virtual currency to cash, thereby reducing the risks associated with Bitcoin’s notorious price fluctuations.
Our sellers can now receive BTC to BTC, BTC to fiat, fiat to BTC, or fiat to fiat.

Square’s update comes in response to growing demand for direct cryptocurrency payment options. More than one in four U.S. retailers say they plan to accept cryptocurrencies by next year, according to a recent survey by the National Retail Federation. Square’s move bucks this trend by offering not only acceptance but also conversion and payment, all in one place.
Reflecting industry trends: The convergence of cryptocurrencies and commerce
Square announced to users, “We hear you’re looking for a merchant that accepts Bitcoin. Now available.” cash upβ, highlighting the ability to access Bitcoin payment options through CashApp, the company’s popular payment platform.

The move makes it easier for both buyers and sellers to transact using Bitcoin and reflects Square’s continued efforts to integrate cryptocurrencies into everyday financial services.
