This time, it’s easier for businesses to accept Bitcoin. At the Bitcoin Conference, Block announced that Square merchants can accept Bitcoin from their customers.
Bitcoin at checkout: Why is it important?
Bitcoin has been a long-standing talk of as a digital alternative to cash. However, in reality, few people use it to buy coffee or pay for services. That’s starting to change. Inflation concerns and growing interest in decentralized finance have warmed more consumers and merchants towards digital payments. A good example comes from the popular Miami Café Panther Coffee. During Bitcoin Miami in 2023, shops began accepting Bitcoin through third-party apps. They increased customer traffic by 12% during event week.
By directly building Bitcoin payments, merchants don’t need to manage individual wallets or learn complex techniques. You’ll see Bitcoin sales along with credit card transactions, and you’ll have the option to instantly convert to dollars using Square’s backend.
Just: Jack Dorsey’s Block begins paying for Bitcoin on Square at Bitcoin Conference.
Merchants can choose to keep the BTC or convert it to Fiat automatically.

This kind of simplicity helps Bitcoin take root in small and medium-sized businesses. And there is demand for that. A 2024 survey from PYMNTS and BITPAY found that 38% of US consumers under the age of 45 were “very” or “very” interested in using crypto for everyday purchases.
Looking ahead: A turning point in cryptocurrency?
For years, crypto advocates have said that massive recruitment starts with payments. Until now, the dream has remained primarily on the bystanders. But Square’s reach (millions of active sellers across the US) were able to finally step into the spotlight.
Still, success depends on education, smooth user experience, and price stability. Block bets that making Bitcoin more accessible is the key to locking its full potential. It’s not just an asset.
